Kid Friendly DIY Liquid Hand Soap

Posted by Marc Mischkind on

Sometimes it can be a battle to get our kids to wash their hands. But what if we make it a little more fun?

Making your own kid-friendly hand soap is an easy and super fun project that the entire family can work on together (we are all looking for time fillers these days!). Your children can be involved with choosing the scents they want their soap to have and even help to mix all the ingredients together. Being able to create something that is unique will make it an exciting treat to use every day. (In our house we store the soap in fun travel sized containers that the kids love to carry around with them. Our youngest daughter is obsessed with the unicorn ones!) Really want to get the kids excited? Try these new slap dispenser bracelets and make cleaning their new superpower😉

Homemade liquid hand soap is one of the simplest natural recipes you can make. It is a bit different in consistency (watery) from store bought but it does the job just the same, if not better.

Not only is this a fun way to make you children more excited to wash their hands, but it also eliminates the possibility of unknown chemicals found in commercial soaps. Some essential oils have natural antibacterial properties that make them a perfect choice for DIY projects like this. Not all essential oils are safe for children. Below is a list of essential oils that we can safely use in our kid’s handmade soap.

Kid-Friendly Essential Oils

  • Basil
  • Bergamot
  • Cedarwood
  • Chamomile
  • Clary Sage
  • Frankincense
  • Geranium
  • Grapefruit
  • Lavender
  • Lemon
  • Lime
  • Neroli
  • Orange
  • Patchouli
  • Peppermint
  • Pine
  • Rose
  • Sandalwood
  • Tangerine
  • Tea Tree

*NOTE* The essential oils listed above are safe to use on children in the liquid soap recipe we provide and if diluted at 3% or lower. This liquid soap recipe is not meant to be used on children under the age of 2 years old. Keep all essential oils out of the reach of unsupervised children. Always wear gloves and long sleeves while working with essential oils.

The best base for homemade hand soap is Dr. Bronner’s liquid castile soap because it is unscented, non-toxic, and safe for the whole family to use. To condition the skin and keep it soft we suggest Fractionated Coconut Oil, Vegetable Glycerin, Sweet Almond Oil, Jojoba Oil, or Aloe Vera Oil.

*NOTE* Adding a carrier oil is important when using essential oils as it helps dilute the essential oil and protect the skin from irritation.
